Explore the mesmerizing Tilicho Lake through the challenging Mesokantu-La pass trek, featuring stunning scenery and high altitude experience. The lake, located at 5000m above sea level in the Manang Valley, is a sacred spot in the Ramayan for Hindu pilgrims. While not significant for the local Buddhists, the lake attracts herders in search of straying yak. The trek offers a great mix of vista and culture, with the two passes Masokanto-la (5099m) and Tilicho pass (5230m) guarding the lake from the Kaligandaki valley.
Today, we drive to Besisahar to start the trek. From there, we drive for 4-5 hours to Chame, a picturesque Gurung Village at the base of a hill. The locals welcome us with smiles and hospitality, making for a great start to the trek.
The walk from Chame to Pisang is beautiful, with woods, small ascents, and breathtaking views of soaring peaks. It’s a 5-hour day, so we’ll have the afternoon in Pisang to explore the village, Tibetan Mani stones, and Gompa. We can also take a walk up to Upper Pisang for amazing views of Annapurna II and Annapurna III.
We’ll trek for 6 hours past colorful Chortens to reach Manang, a village of 500 flat-roofed houses at 3500m, surrounded by high peaks. In Manang, we can explore the village’s old Gompa, teahouses, and winding streets.
Today is our acclimatization day, with plenty of options: a long hike to Ice Lake, a visit to Hundred Rupee Lama at the cave gompa above Manang, a two-hour hike to Milarepa’s cave, the HRA talk, or a bakery tour in Manang. We’ll do a short acclimatization hike of about 300 meters, nothing too strenuous. The guesthouse is cozy and provides a sunny spot to admire the peaks in the afternoon
Today we head towards Tilicho Lake, taking a path down to the river and crossing the Khangsar Khola. We reach Khangsar Village, then continue to the traditional Tibetan region. Our overnight stay is at Shree Kharka, where we hike in the afternoon to see the surrounding mountains.
Today we pass a monastery and take a newly constructed path towards a high ridge with an intersection. The old path is difficult and steep, while the new path goes a different way. We follow the new path, reach a high crest, and descend on switchbacks to a side valley where Tilicho Base Camp is located at an elevation of 4,200m.
Early start to avoid wind, 3-4 hr trek to Tilicho Lake – highest lake in the world. We spend time taking pictures and return to Base Camp for lunch. After lunch, trek to Siri Kharka across landslide area
We continue our trek to Manang Village, passing a monastery and having lunch in Khangsar. After reaching Manang, we can celebrate our accomplishment with a cold beer, a hot shower. Overnight stay in Manang.
Today we drive back from Manang Valley to Besisahar in a comfortable tourist jeep, passing through picturesque apple farms and small villages where we stop for a delicious lunch of dhal bhat. The journey can be tiring, so we spend the night in Besisahar to rest and take a refreshing shower.
We drive back to Kathmandu today, which takes around 6 hours.
